Protesters to Target Putin in Maine

KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine -- Protesters say they will rally near the home where President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President George W. Bush are meeting Sunday in Maine.

The two presidents are invading and occupying Muslim territories -- Chechnya and Iraq, said Jamilla El-Shafei, one of the organizers.

"Both have invaded small, oil-rich Muslim countries," El-Shafei said Monday. "We need to bring that to the attention of the world because they're equally detestable. They're breeding terrorism in a Muslim world that's already outraged."

The demonstration is scheduled to coincide with Putin's arrival to meet with Bush at the seaside home of Bush's father, former President George H.W. Bush. El-Shafei, a local business owner, organized a similar event last summer when Bush visited Kennebunkport.

This year, a 2.1-meter replica of the Statue of Liberty will be placed in a coffin for a mock funeral procession that organizers said will commemorate the loss of liberties under Bush.
