Close Call Over Vnukovo

Two jets narrowly missed a midair collision over Vnukovo Airport on Wednesday, RIA-Novosti reported.

A Challenger-60 small jet flying from Moscow to Zurich violated directions from air traffic controllers at around 8:30 a.m. and narrowly missed colliding with a Boeing 757, said Marina Murova, an air traffic spokeswoman. The aircraft came within 120 meters vertically and five kilometers horizontally, she said.

It was unclear late Wednesday who operated the flights or how many passengers were involved. (MT)

Austria Arrests 2 in Spy Case

VIENNA -- A Russian national and an Austrian air force vice lieutenant have been arrested on suspicion of espionage in Austria, government officials said Wednesday.

Austrian daily Kurier said the men were arrested in or around Linz on Monday and were being held for questioning in connection with exchanging secret intelligence and supplying military intelligence to a foreign state.

The Defense Ministry confirmed that an Austrian vice lieutenant had been arrested, and the Interior Ministry confirmed the arrest of a Russian. Both declined to give further details. (Reuters)

Man Hit by Metro Train

A man was hospitalized with multiple injuries after he was hit by a train at the Krasniye Vorota metro station Wednesday, RIA-Novosti reported.

Trains on the Red Line were halted for 15 minutes after the incident at 8:30 a.m. It was unclear whether the man accidentally fell or threw himself in front of the train. Last week, a man died after falling onto the rails at the Komsomolskaya metro station. (MT)

Italy Arrests Russian Ninja

A Russian citizen has been arrested in northeast Italy for attacking and robbing villagers with a bow and arrow while dressed as a ninja, RIA-Novosti reported Wednesday.

Igor Vaclavic, 31, was arrested Monday near the town of Rovigo after residents armed themselves with knives and pitchforks and attacked him when he tried to pull off a robbery, RIA-Novosti said, citing Italian police.

Police said Vaclavic, dressed in a ninja outfit, targeted isolated farms and demand the owners hand over money and jewelry while holding them up at bow-point. (MT)
