A Moscow man is facing murder charges after traffic police discovered a dead prostitute stuffed in a suitcase in the trunk of his car, prosecutors said Tuesday.

The officers pulled over Oleg Tretyakov, 36, in his Honda Civic early Sunday morning in the Kashirsky District of the Moscow region, about 100 kilometers south of Moscow, said Yelena Rossokhina, a spokeswoman for the Moscow region prosecutor's office.

Upon inspection, police found the body of a woman "carefully packed" in plastic bags and stuffed in a suitcase in the trunk, Rossokhina said.

The woman appeared to have been beaten to death, and Tretyakov and his passenger were detained for questioning.

According to investigators, Tretyakov and the woman, a 31-year-old prostitute originally from the Volgograd region, quarreled Saturday night at his Moscow apartment after she called her pimp to complain about him. At some point during the argument, Tretyakov grabbed a hammer and delivered several deadly blows to her head.

"In order to cover up the crime, he tied the body up with ropes, wrapped it in plastic bags, and packed it into a suitcase," Rossokhina said.

Tretyakov had driven the body out of the city to bury it when he was pulled over by the traffic police. Tretyakov's passenger is not a suspect in the crime and is being treated as a witness.

"The suspect was simply giving him a ride," Rossokhina said. "He did not know about the body."

The Kashira City Court on Tretyakov's arrest Tuesday, and he will be handed over to city prosecutors to be charged. If charged and convicted of murder, he faces up to life in prison.
