50 Young Campers are Hospitalized

Fifty children and two adults from a summer camp in the Moscow region have been hospitalized with symptoms of poisoning, Interfax reported Wednesday.

An additional 10 people were being treated at the Smena camp itself.

The campers fell ill early Wednesday, said a spokeswoman from the Central Administrative District of the Moscow city government, which sends children to the camp, Interfax reported.

The spokeswoman suggested that it was probably a case of food poisoning, although the exact cause has not yet been determined.

Meanwhile, a Siberian court on Wednesday punished a cook and the director of a catering company for poisoning 287 people with salmonella, RIA-Novosti reported. The incident took place at a ball hosted by the Krasnoyarsk governor and attended by 1,500 people in March. The Krasnoyarsk court fined the cook 30,000 rubles ($1,150) and barred the director from catering for one year and nine months.
