Protest at Russia-EU Summit

Anti-Kremlin protesters plan to rally against President Vladimir Putin at a Volga River summit later this month between Russia and the European Union, The Other Russia said Thursday.

"This is a local initiative, they informed us about their plans today," said Denis Belunov, adviser to former chess champion and Other Russia leader Garry Kasparov.

"I can't confirm whether Other Russia leaders will be there, but they do plan to support it and will at least send representatives," he said.

Putin will host the summit on May 18 in the Volga resort of Volzhsky Utyos, located near the city of Samara. German Chancellor Angela Merkel and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso are among the leaders expected to attend.

Belunov said he expected only about 300 demonstrators at the rally because of the risk of detention.

Local authorities have yet to decide whether to sanction the protest.

The Other Russia coalition brings together Kremlin opponents from across the political spectrum. They say Putin has trampled democratic freedoms and demand a free and fair presidential election in 2008.

Last month, The Other Russia organized Dissenters' Marches in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Nizhny Novgorod.

Thousands of riot police quashed the demonstrations, detaining and beating hundreds of protesters.
