Officer Fined In Uzbek Case

A Moscow court fined a police officer who ordered the deportation of an Uzbek asylum seeker back to his homeland, where he was later convicted and imprisoned after a trial that his lawyer said was rigged, a human rights group said Friday.

The Butyrsky District Court found that Sergei Gerasimov exceeded his duties as the then-head of Moscow's Severny detention center for foreign citizens and fined him $1,350, the Civic Assistance Committee said.

Gerasimov ordered the deportation of Rustam Muminov last October even though he had appealed to the committee and to the UN refugee agency for protection -- a decision Muminov's lawyer said was made under pressure from the Federal Security Service, which acted at the request of Uzbek authorities.
