No Major Fault Found at Exxon Field

Environmental inspectors found no major violations of the law during an investigation into the ExxonMobil-led Sakhalin-1 oil and gas project, Itar-Tass reported Wednesday.

The agency quoted an unidentified official at the Natural Resources Ministry as saying the inspectors were finalizing their findings and would announce them within weeks.

Investors follow environmental inspections carefully because several major foreign firms have been forced to cede control of their projects after sustained criticism from officials and threats of administrative sanctions.

The most vocal critic is Oleg Mitvol, deputy head of the Federal Service for the Inspection of Natural Resources Use, who said in March that the inspections would focus on how Exxon and its partners fulfilled their environmental obligations.

Inspections conducted last year by the technical regulations service delayed full-scale exports from the project on Sakhalin after finding Exxon needed to do more work at its export terminal.
