Worker Dies Fleeing Fire

A furniture factory employee plunged to his death while trying to escape a blaze that broke out in the factory Monday in northern Moscow.

The employee jumped out of a third-story window after a fire broke out March 8 at around 10 a.m. at the furniture factory, on Aviamotornaya Ulitsa, near the Aviamotornaya metro station. One other employee jumped from a third-story window and was hospitalized with injuries, Interfax reported.

The blaze consumed 1,000 square meters of the factory's premises, and it took more than one hour for 25 firefighting brigades and three helicopters to extinguish it.

Three people died in a fire that broke out in the same building in April 2006. (MT)

Sberbank Robbery Suspect

Police have detained a woman suspected of involvement in Saturday's robbery of $1.5 million from a Sberbank branch in Chita, Interfax reported Monday, citing police sources. Two guards were shot dead.

The identity of the woman and her role in the crime was not disclosed.

The Prosecutor General's Office took over the investigation from its regional branch Monday. Sberbank offered 5 million rubles ($196,000) for information about the robbery. (MT)
