NATO Computer Expert in Estonia

BRUSSELS -- NATO has sent a cyber-crime expert to Estonia to fight recent electronic attacks against its government institutions, concerned that the military alliance might also be targeted, an official said Thursday.

Estonian web sites, including those of some ministries, have been exposed to attacks as relations between the country and Russia have plunged to a new low following the relocation of a Soviet memorial in Tallinn, Estonia's capital.

"Because it's an Estonian problem it's also a problem for us. We do take security very seriously," the official said.

NATO is examining the impact of the cyber attacks on Estonia -- an alliance and EU member -- and is in constant touch with Estonian officials over the issue, the official said.

Estonian officials have said the attacks came directly from the Kremlin.
