Ministry Says U.S. OPEC Bill Is Illegal

Russia said Wednesday that the U.S. House of Representatives broke international law when voting Tuesday to approve a bill to allow the U.S. government to sue OPEC and similar organizations for price manipulations.

"This decision is a violation of the norms of international law," Vesti-24 television quoted a statement by the Foreign Ministry as saying.

The House of Representatives voted Tuesday to approve the "No Oil Producing and Exporting Cartels Act of 2007," or "NOPEC," The bill would revoke the sovereign immunity Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries members currently enjoy from U.S. legal action and allow the Justice Department to sue them in U.S. courts.

The White House threatened to veto the bill saying it could push crude oil and gasoline prices higher, and that foreign nations would likely retaliate by limiting U.S. access to global oil supply.
