Expocenter Director Attacked

A bodyguard with bullet wounds in both knees shot dead two armed assailants who broke into the Moscow region home of the head of Expocenter, prosecutors said Wednesday.

Three masked assailants carrying guns and knives broke into the home of Vladislav Malkevich in the town of Bakovka, west of Moscow, at around 10 p.m. Tuesday while Malkevich was at home with his family, the Moscow region prosecutor's office said in a statement.

When Malkevich's bodyguard attempted to stop the assailants, they shot him once in each knee and went up to the third floor to find the businessman.

The bodyguard, however, managed to follow them upstairs and shot two of them dead when he found them choking Malkevich and demanding money from him, the statement said.

The third assailant escaped, and witnesses said they saw a Lada hatchback and a motor scooter leaving the scene, RIA-Novosti reported.

It was unclear whether any other suspects were involved in the attack.

The bodyguard, whose name has not been released, has been hospitalized but is in stable condition, prosecutors said, adding that they are investigating whether he used justifiable force.

Neither Malkevich, 70, nor his family was injured in the attack, reported. Malkevich has headed Expocenter, located on Krasnopresnenskaya Naberezhnaya in central Moscow, since 2002. It operates and organizes international trade shows, fairs and congresses.
