Anti-Chechen Sentiments Feared

Chechen activists on Monday accused law enforcement officials of trying to stir anti-Chechen sentiments following the arrest of two students linked to a car bomb plot in Moscow.

Police arrested Umar Batukayev and Ruslan Musayev on May 10, the day after the Victory Day holiday. The Federal Security Service said it had discovered an explosives-packed car in the city.

"The case reeks of yet another witch hunt against Chechens," defense lawyer Murad Musayev told reporters.

Batukayev's mother has said he was mistreated while in detention. At a preliminary court hearing after his arrest, Batukayev appeared unable to walk, was nearly carried into the courtroom by guards and fell down the stairs after the hearing, Fatima Batukayeva said.

"My son is a healthy boy, and I want to know why he was drugged and could barely stand on his feet in the courtroom," she told reporters.
