A Romantic Getaway

MTArcachon's main dining room has a cozy, country-style ambiance.
Arcachon is a charming little French restaurant in a hard-to-find location. It's the kind of place that could easily become your favorite covert meeting spot, perfect for a secret rendezvous. Hidden around the side of the Aerovokzal on Leningradsky Prospekt, the restaurant is unlikely to pick up much passing trade.

Out front is a large enclosed veranda with a summery feel, while inside the main dining hall has a cozy country-style design, pleasantly executed and not at all tacky. A VIP section in the back has inviting armchairs and a nonfunctioning fireplace. The background music is soothingly appropriate.

The menu offers a classical selection of French and other European dishes with an accent on seafood. There is a decent selection of various sorts of fish, all sold by weight (watch out -- the menu simply lists each one as 100 grams, which may cause some confusion when you get the bill and your whole sea bass turns out to have weighed 400 grams). Some of the other highlights from the menu include whole mussels in their shells served with white sauce (390 rubles), bouillabaisse fish soup with croutons (490 rubles), sterlet with spinach (515 rubles) and Flemish-style eel (465 rubles). The portions are not enormous, but then this is fine French cuisine.

The wines start at about 800 rubles a bottle, and there is an interesting range of German and French bottled beer as well as Budweiser (225 rubles a half-liter) and Hoegaarden (255 rubles a half-liter).

Given its out-of-the-way location, it's not surprising that Arcachon specializes in banquets. Guests should note that their presence doesn't deter the staff from rearranging the dining room in preparation for the next day's wedding party, even on a Saturday evening at 9 p.m. If that's likely to bother you, call first to find out if the staff will be setting up for events planned for the following day -- or hosting a banquet at the time you plan to visit, for that matter.
