5 Senators Arrive From Washington

A delegation of U.S. senators arrived Tuesday for talks with Russian officials on terrorism, nuclear proliferation and energy issues.

Among the five senators are Republican Whip Trent Lott from Mississippi and Nebraska Democrat Ben Nelson. It is likely the last high-level visit before Presidents Vladimir Putin and George W. Bush meet at next week's G8 summit in Germany.

"This is a good format for exchanging views," Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said before meeting the senators late Tuesday.

The senators will also meet Economic Development and Trade Minister German Gref, Federal Atomic Energy Agency chief Sergei Kiriyenko, Security Council head Igor Ivanov and Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller.

The U.S. lawmakers are members of a joint working group between the U.S. Senate and the Federation Council that is chaired by Lott, Nelson and Mikhail Margelov, head of the Federation Council's International Affairs Committee.
