10 Held at Nizhny Novgorod Rally

Nizhny Novgorod police arrested at least 10 protesters during the latest in a series of anti-government demonstrations that have met a stern police response.

Organizers of the Dissenters' March said some 100 people had rallied Saturday on a central square in Nizhny Novgorod and that an unknown number had been detained by riot police, who moved in immediately after protesters began chanting, "We'll Take Nizhny Back!"

Nizhny Novgorod regional police chief Alexander Gorbatov said authorities detained 10 participants after people started lighting flares. He said the protest was unsanctioned.

The Other Russia -- a group uniting several opposition movements -- has organized a series of marches intended to protest what they say is the growing authoritarianism of President Vladimir Putin's government.
