Yanukovych Signals a Softer Line

KIEV -- Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych signaled a readiness to compromise on Thursday, saying he might agree to early elections even if the Constitutional Court ruled against the president.

"If the Constitutional Court declares the decree unconstitutional, elections are possible if all participants in the political process agree at a political level," Yanukovych said after meeting with Lithuanian Prime Minister Gediminas Kirkilas.

However, Yanukovych spokesman Denis Ivanesko said the prime minister would not agree to elections under any condition.

President Viktor Yushchenko told reporters Thursday that his order to dissolve the parliament and hold new elections would stand, but he indicated that he could put off the election date from May 27 "if there is a political desire."
