United Russia Readies for Polls

State Duma Deputy Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin will spearhead United Russia's campaign for parliamentary elections in December, the party said.

Volodin, who heads the presidium of the pro-Kremlin party's general council, will be assisted by Andrei Vorobyov, head of the party's central committee, and Leonid Ivlev, deputy head of the domestic politics department in the presidential administration, the party said in a statement on its web site.

United Russia said it also had reshuffled its regional branches, dismissing about 30 percent of its regional leaders.

In other Duma election news, the Union of Right Forces, or SPS, is expected to elect three leaders to head its party list in the vote this summer. The three might be the liberal party's founders Boris Nemtsov, Yegor Gaidar and Anatoly Chubais, Vedomosti reported Tuesday.

Nemtsov told Vedomosti that he would consider taking a more active role in SPS ahead of the December elections.
