Patriarch Treated By Swiss Doctors

Russian Orthodox Patriarch Alexy II has undergone medical treatment in Switzerland but will soon return to work, a source in the Moscow Patriarchate said Friday.

"His Holiness today phoned to confirm his working schedule for May," the source said. "Rumors that he is feeling worse are not true."

The source said Alexy, 78, had received treatment while on holiday in Switzerland. He did not specify what was wrong with the patriarch.

Alexy's absence from the state funeral of former President Boris Yeltsin on Wednesday raised concerns about his health and sparked rumors that he was gravely ill.

The church's second most senior cleric, Metropolitan Yuvenaly, presided over the services.

A church source described rumors of Alexy's worsening health as "nothing but fabrications," Interfax reported.

Alexy is in "constant contact with his subordinates in Moscow and is discussing work with them," the source said.
