Opposition March Request Rejected

City Hall on Monday rejected a request from The Other Russia, a coalition of political opposition groups, for permission to hold a large-scale march in central Moscow, activists said.

Organizers of the so-called Dissenters' March submitted the request last Friday. They sought a permit to gather on Pushkin Square at noon on April 14 before proceeding down Tverskaya Ulitsa to Teatralnaya Ploshchad.

City officials turned down the organizers' application and informed them that the pro-Kremlin youth group Young Guard had already reserved Pushkin Square on April 14, said Alexander Averin, spokesman for the unregistered National Bolshevik Party, who submitted the application.

Moscow police chief Vladimir Pronin told Interfax on Monday that large-scale demonstrations such as the Dissenters' March should be held at isolated locations such as the Tushino airfield.
