Hicks to Be Held Incommunicado

CANBERRA, Australia -- Taliban ally David Hicks will be barred from speaking to the media as part of a plea deal that will soon return him to Australia from Cuba.

Hicks will serve a nine-month sentence in a prison in his hometown of Adelaide after admitting in a plea deal at Guantanamo Bay last week that he had aided al-Qaida.

The deal prevents him from talking to the media for 12 months or pursing his allegations of abuse while in U.S. custody.

Terry Hicks questioned why the prosecution agreed to such a lenient sentence in return for a guilty plea, rather than pursue a trial and the 20-year sentence they claimed his son deserved. "I believe it's too coincidental that David is kept out of sight until after the election," he added.
