Downtown Blast Kills One, Wounds 4

An explosive device mounted on a motorcycle detonated near an office building in central Moscow on Wednesday, killing a businessman and wounding four others.

Prosecutors opened an investigation into the case. They estimated that the explosives in the device were equivalent to 500 grams of TNT.

Authorities did not release the name of the businessman, saying he was a 46-year-old native of North Ossetia and head Blagovest, whose offices are located nearby on Shmitovsky Proyezd.

Blagovest deals in alcoholic beverages and is also involved in the retail business, according to an online commercial registry. A woman who answered the phone at the company refused to comment on the death.

"This was not a terrorist attack. The most likely scenario is that it was related to the man's business activities," Valentina Titova, a spokeswoman for the City Prosecutor's Office, said in televised remarks.

The wounded were hospitalized, one in serious condition. The 11:55 a.m. blast also destroyed a baked-goods kiosk and damaged several cars.
