A Cosmic Coffee Shop

MTAfter a slow start, Vkhod-Vykhod's stars have come into alignment.
Visiting Vkhod-Vykhod is like you've died and gone to hippie heaven. If it was a little sparse inside when it first opened, now it is overflowing with flower power -- packed to the rafters with ethnic knickknacks, self-help books and tie-dyed clothing. Besides the Age of Aquarius paraphernalia, the center offers a full eco supermarket with many hard-to-find spices and condiments, plus other services such as an oxygen bar, palm and tarot reading, aura photographing, astrology consultations and self-

improvement seminars.

In among all this happy hippiness is Vkhod-Vykhod's Eko Cafe. At one end, amid a collection of potted plants, is a small photo exhibition of exotic mountain scenes, while a flat-screen television shows oriental tea ceremonies. The ceiling is draped with a large swathe of white cloth and the soothing music adds to the mellow-yellow vibe.

The menu is surprisingly extensive and inexpensive, with a wide range of dishes including many that you may not have expected to find in such a place. This is not an exclusively macrobiotic, biodynamic or even vegetarian establishment. The sandwich list includes a "Birds of Paradise Constellation," or duck with raspberry cheese (90 rubles), a " Piscean Constellation," or salmon and cucumber (110 rubles) and "Taurus Constellation," beef sirloin and tomato (90 rubles). For animal lovers, a vegetarian sandwich (70 rubles) is offered, but it lacks a fancy name or description on the menu.

The menu also has an interesting range of rice dishes, such as the surprising and delicious risotto with beet, horseradish and cashews (120 rubles), saffron rice with raisins and pistachios (110 rubles) and jasmine rice with prawns and vegetables (190 rubles). There are also soups, salads, main dishes, homemade sweets and more.

Of course, the juice selection is large and includes plenty of both freshly squeezed (110 rubles) and mixed combinations (110-130 rubles). There are five varieties of lassi (90 rubles). The coffee and tea selection is also good (espresso 40 rubles). Beer in the bottle is also available (Harp 330 milliliters for 80 rubles).
