Warm Weather Comes One Month Ahead of Schedule

Temperatures Tuesday in Moscow hit 15 degrees Celsius, one degree short of the record high for March.

"The weather is a month ahead of itself," said Aleksei Lyakhov, general director of the Moscow Region Weather Bureau.

Since the start of the month, temperatures have been about 6 degrees above the average for this time of year.

The warm weather prompted the bears at the Moscow Zoo to awake on Saturday from their winter hibernation -- which got a late start this year due to the cold's late onset.

A zoo spokeswoman said the bears were not grouchy from the lack of sleep.

The unusually warm weather, accompanied by almost cloudless skies, is expected to continue into next week, Lyakhov said.

Daytime temperatures will drop slightly to 11 to 13 C.

Nighttime temperatures will continue to hover around zero until the weekend, when they are expected to rise slightly.

Lyakhov warned that wintry weather could still resume for a few days in early April.

"It's not summer just yet," he said.
