Vietnam Concerned by Acquittal

HANOI, Vietnam -- Vietnam's Foreign Ministry has summoned the Russian ambassador in Hanoi to complain about the acquittal of suspects in the killing of a Vietnamese student in St. Petersburg, state media reported Thursday.

Last November, a court in St. Petersburg acquitted all 17 Russian teenagers who were suspected of involvement in the stabbing death of Vu Anh Tuan, 20, in October 2004. The verdict was upheld by the Supreme Court earlier this month.

Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Phu Binh told Russian Ambassador Vadim Serafimov on Wednesday that the acquittals had been met with "disappointment and discontent by the victim's family and the Vietnamese people as a whole," the Communist Party newspaper Nhan Dan [People] said.
