Poll: People Don't Care About Politics

More than half of Russians do not care about politics, and their indifference is growing, according to a survey released Monday.

Fifty-four percent of respondents expressed little or no interest in politics, compared to 44 percent who were somewhat or very interested in politics, said the survey, carried out by state-owned polling agency VTsIOM.

A similar survey in November 2005 found that 50 percent did not care about politics while 48 percent did.

The margin of error for the surveys was 3.4 percentage points.

Many respondents of the latest survey explained their lack of interest in politics by their inability to influence it. Other reasons given included: politics should be left to professionals, politics are unimportant, and there is not enough time to think about politics.

One in 10 believed the president would solve the country's problems.

The survey of 1,600 people in 46 regions was conducted March 17 and 18.
