MGTS to Spend $1.6Bln to Go Digital

Moscow City Telephone Network, or MGTS, Moscow's fixed-line monopolist, has earmarked $1.6 billion to digitalize its network by 2011, Vedomosti reported Monday, citing company CEO Alexei Goltsov.

MGTS is Moscow's largest local exchange carrier, with more than 4.2 million subscribers.

"The measure will allow MGTS to conform to European standards as well as make expansion of its subscriber base possible," MGTS spokeswoman Yekaterina Nevskaya said.

"Digitizing the network will give subscribers access to caller ID, call transfer, SMS and conference call services," Nevskaya said. "Subscribers currently using paired telephone lines stand to gain most from digitized network because each gets separate numbers."

MGTS invests about $250 million per year, of which half is used to upgrade its network, Vedomosti said. By the end of last year, the company had digitized 40 percent of its network.
