Margelov Raises Concerns About Iran

Mikhail Margelov, head of the Federation Council's Foreign Affairs Committee, said Thursday that Iran might convert its uranium-enrichment program into a nuclear arsenal, Interfax reported.

Margelov's comments followed a recent trip he took to Iran.

While on his trip, Margelov said, he asked "direct questions on the nature of the country's military program." But, he added, "I did not get any straight answers to my questions. I only had an impression they were evading answering questions. It appeared that the Iranians were ... giving the impression that they do not exclude any possible scenario for the development of their country's nuclear program."

Iran has ignored a UN deadline to halt the enrichment of uranium, which the United States says is part of a secret effort to build nuclear weapons.

Also Thursday, Nikolai Bordyuzha, secretary-general of the Collective Security Threat, a military pact that includes six former Soviet states, warned the United States not to use force against Iran. "Strikes against Iran won't have any significant influence," he said.
