Man Hails Ambulance After Being Shot

A Chinese market worker sitting in his car was shot through the front windshield early Friday by an unidentified assailant in eastern Moscow.

The incident took place at about 6 a.m., as the man, whose name was not disclosed, was sitting behind the front wheel on Izmailovskoye Shosse, Interfax reported. His wife, also Chinese, was sitting in the passenger seat next to him.

The gunshot did not kill the man, who managed to flag down an ambulance that was returning from a fire at a nearby apartment building.

He was taken to the hospital, where his condition was described as critical.

Boris Kravtsov, the eastern district prosecutor, confirmed the attack but would not offer any other details.

Prosecutors are investigating the possibility that the shooting was linked to criminal gangs. The man's wife was unable to help police initially because she does not speak Russian.

The victim worked at the Cherkizovsky market, where most of the stalls are run by people from Central Asia and the Far East.

Markets have been the scene of racially motivated violence in recent months. Last August, for instance, three men are believed to have detonated a bomb at Cherkizovsky, killing 11 and injuring 45.
