Ex-Cops Held in Murder Probe

Five former police officers who are suspected of carrying out at least 15 murders in Moscow have been detained, RIA-Novosti reported Wednesday.

A source in the City Prosecutor's Office, which is conducting the investigation, said the officers assaulted and robbed wealthy Muscovites, some of whom were subsequently murdered. The bodies were dumped in forested areas outside the city.

The source said several victims who survived had already identified the officers as their attackers.

Also on Wednesday, RIA-Novosti reported that a police captain in the city's organized crime unit had been arrested and charged in a 1999 murder. It was not immediately clear if the captain was one of the five policemen.

Prosecutors told the news agency that their investigation into the 1999 murder was complete, and that they were certain of the captain's guilt.

Police officers have been involved in a number of high-profile criminal cases in recent years.

In one example, three policemen, including the town's top traffic officer, were arrested in January in the Ural Mountains town of Prokopyevsk and charged with carjacking and murder.
