Defense Minister Starts an Internal Audit

Recently appointed Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov has ordered an internal audit of his ministry and hired several officials from the Federal Tax Service to help out.

Serdyukov headed the Federal Tax Service until President Vladimir Putin appointed him defense minister in February.

A group of Federal Tax Service officials and Defense Ministry auditors are carrying out "individual financial checks" on a number of military officials, Interfax reported Friday, citing a source in the Defense Ministry.

The source said no one had been fired as a result of the checks, but noted that General Anatoly Mazurkevich had recently resigned from the ministry's international military cooperation department. The source did not elaborate.

Serdyukov also has hired several people who worked with him as auditors and advisers in the Federal Tax Service to serve in similar capacities at the Defense Ministry. Among the appointees is Alexander Sukhorkov, a career tax official who audited the tax service's central staff to "detect violations and deal with them," a tax service source told Interfax on Friday.
