Churov Tipped as Elections Chief

State Duma Deputy Vladimir Churov is expected to be named the head of the Central Election Commission this week, election commission sources said Friday.

Asked whether Churov, a member of the Liberal Democratic Party, was the front-runner to be new election chief, a senior commission official said: "Most likely you are not mistaken."

Several other commission members also favored Churov for the post.

Churov and President Vladimir Putin were classmates at a St. Petersburg school, and Putin later was Churov's immediate boss in the city's external relations committee, a former City Hall official said.

"They studied in the same class and have known each other for ages," the official said.

Asked about his possible appointment to the job, Churov said: "I have no information about this."

Putin effectively sacked long-serving commission chief Alexander Veshnyakov this month.
