Celebrate Paddy's Day

Moscow is turning a little bit green this weekend as the city celebrates St. Patrick's Day.

On Friday, Maria Singal of the Russian Celtic Society, Vladimir Lazerson and German band Celtic Consort Jamestown Ferry are to perform at the Central House of Artists (6:30 p.m., 10 Krymsky Val, 230-1782, M. Oktyabrskaya, 350-500 rubles).

Saturday -- St. Patrick's Day -- sees Irish rock music liven Sally O'Brien's pub at 6 p.m. (1/3 Ul. Bolshaya Polyanka, 959-0175, M. Polyanka) and another Irish-inflected performance at the Central House of Artists: Maria Singal, Gury-yo-Gurt from Kiev and the Racoons from Nizhny Novgorod (6:30 p.m., 350-500 rubles).

Klub na Brestskoi (6 2nd Brestskaya Ul., 694-0936, M. Belorusskaya/ Mayakovskaya, 500 rubles) has green beer -- staff aren't sure what it contains -- and a nonstop folk marathon starting at 7 p.m., with performances from bagpipe ensemble Moscow Pipes and Drums and other bands playing Irish and Celtic-themed music. At Shestnadtsat Tonn (6 Presnensky Val, M. Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 253-5300, 500 rubles), Moscow Irish-music groups Puck & Piper and Tintal play at 10 p.m.

About 200,000 spectators are expected at Sunday's parade on Novy Arbat, starting at 1 p.m. at Novoarbatsky Bridge and ending at the Arbatskaya metro station. Floats, Irish wolfhounds, Irish setters, cheerleaders and tin-whistle tunes are promised.

Sally O'Brien's is hosting bagpipers after the parade, while at Belfast pub (1/13 Sredny Ovchinnikovsky Per., 953-0556, M. Novokuznetskaya) there'll be more traditional music from 2 p.m.

Rosie O'Grady's pub (22/1 Ul. Timura Frunze, M. Park Kultury, 545-1728) is offering a 30 percent discount on all food, to continue over the weekend, while at the Shamrock pub (11 Ul. Novy Arbat, 291-7681, M. Arbatskaya) a half-liter of Guinness is going for 210 rubles, formerly 240 rubles, with discounts also on the Irish breakfast, cream coffee and Jameson whiskey. There are no special events at Silver's Irish pub (5/6 Tverskaya Ul., 290-4222, M. Okhotny Ryad), staff say -- but that doesn't mean you can't drop in for a pint.
