Cafe for Work and Play

MTThe new Cafe 15 is a slick spot to stop for sushi or a Caesar salad.
Down in the park when hunger pangs strike? If the park is Gorky Park or the neighboring Neskuchny Sad, then you are in luck. The summer shashlik cafes may not be working, and Chaikhona No. 1 may be full -- but now there's another option. Directly opposite Gorky Park's little-used back entry, on the other side of Leninsky Prospekt, is a new business center with Cafe 15 on its ground floor.

Clearly aiming to attract the worker bees from upstairs, the cafe is pleasantly bustle-free after work hours and on weekends. It forms an interesting "L" shape around the corner of the building and features huge floor-to-ceiling windows that let in plenty of light. The interior sports the usual slick minimalism found in the city's modern office-worker lunch spots -- not dissimilar to, say, the Correa's chain. Unfortunately, although the food is not bad, it's safe to say it's not quite up to the standard of Correa's.

The breakfast menu, which runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., offers three varieties of porridge (60 rubles) with various additions (25 rubles each). Omelets go for 120 rubles, and fresh juices range from 120 rubles to 250 rubles.

The rest of the menu could be described as modern Moscow's greatest hits. There's the compulsory sushi, Caesar salads (chicken -- 160 rubles, salmon -- 180 rubles) and flavor-of-the-moment tomato and mozzarella (180 rubles). Among the soups is the Asian double of miso (100 rubles) and spicy Singapore soup (160 rubles). Mains include duck breast (270 rubles), lamb chops with potato au gratin (400 rubles) and dorado with vegetables (450 rubles). There is a small selection of pizzas ranging from 150 rubles for margarita to 270 rubles for ground beef.

As is becoming increasingly common around town, Cafe 15 opened before receiving its liquor license. But it does have beer, including Hoegaarden for 180 rubles per half-liter.
