Rambler has never introduced limitations on Internet use at work. We don't track the sites our employees go to. In our case, it doesn't make any sense, because the company's business is built on the Internet. The Internet is the very essence of the company. Rambler trusts its employees and understands that the criteria for evaluating work are never connected with how much time is spent on the Internet for personal purposes."

In general, as for any other Western law firms, the use of the firm's resources is limited to the firm's business purposes only, and if the use for personal reasons is authorized occasionally, it is charged to the individual's personal account.  Our employees may use the Internet for personal purposes sometimes, but they all are aware that this use is monitored and that the abuses are followed up carefully. As a law firm, we do maintain strong regulations, but we also make sure there is a healthy balance of discipline."

The fact that employees are using the Internet for personal purposes during work is an indicator of two things -- first, of their commitment to the working process and their attitude to results, and second, of poor management. One of the tasks of a manager is to keep an employee busy so that there are no gaps during the day when they can feel free to spend time doing personal things on the Internet.

"If it's at the expense of an employee's tasks, there should be a clear warning face to face. If that doesn't work, I would ask one of our IT people how much time they were spending on sites they weren't supposed to and deduct it from their holiday days."

Margot Clarenbeek, head of people department in Russia and CIS, KPMG:

In a business like KPMG, staff surf the Internet to find information that they need for their work. If they perform their job in time and to a high quality, I have no problem with them occasionally using the Internet for personal reasons. Of course, if you notice that it interferes with the way in which they perform their job, it is time to sit down with them and remind them of the rules of the game. If a person then ignores your comments and does not behave in accordance with the company's values, this needs to feed into the person's performance evaluation like any other observation for performance improvement."
