Apartment Blaze Kills 6 in Ivanovo

A fire swept through an apartment building in Ivanovo on Monday, killing at least six people, an Emergency Situations Ministry official said.

The blaze broke out before dawn in a two-story building containing eight apartments in Ivanovo, capital of the Ivanovo region, ministry spokesman Viktor Beltsov said.

Firefighters put out the fire in about four hours, Beltsov said. They found six bodies in the building and were still searching, he said, adding that the cause of the blaze had yet to be determined.

An Emergency Situations Ministry source told Interfax that the fire was not reported immediately because it began early in the morning.

"Furthermore, it is an old, two-story wooden building built in the 1930s," the source told Interfax.

Russia records about 18,000 fire deaths per year -- roughly 10 times the rate in the United States. Experts say fire fatalities have skyrocketed since the end of the Soviet Union, in part because of disregard for safety standards.
