55 Cities Could Face Spring Floods

More than 55 cities and towns across the country could be flooded this spring, according to a forecast released by the Emergency Situations Ministry.

River ice will begin to melt and high water will arrive by mid-March, significantly earlier than usual, according to the abridged version of the ministry's forecast posted on its web site Tuesday.

Flooding will affect a smaller area than last year because of the unusually warm winter and light precipitation.

Areas facing the highest risk of flooding include the cities of Novgorod, Ura, Orenburg, Kurgan, Barnaul, Kemerovo, Tomsk and Naryan-Mar, cited the report as saying.

In the Moscow region, only parts of the Lukhovitsky district could face flooding.

Flooding could reach areas where livestock that died of anthrax have been buried in Dagestan and the Stavropol region, which could lead to an outbreak of the disease as bacteria are spread by high water, the forecast warned.
