Yukos Lawyers Briefly Held

Lawyers for imprisoned oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky and his business partner were briefly detained at a Moscow airport Sunday, a day before new charges were expected to filed against their clients, one of the lawyers said.

Five lawyers for Khodorkovsky and Platon Lebedev were detained by police at Domodedovo Airport as they were waiting to register for a flight to Chita, where their clients are in custody, lawyer Yury Shmidt said.

Speaking on his mobile phone, Shmidt said he and the others were held for about an hour without explanation, and then were released.

Shmidt said Saturday that prosecutors would file new charges against Khodorkovsky on Monday, raising the prospect of years more in prison for the former Yukos chief. He said prosecutors had instructed Khodorkovsky's legal team to travel to Chita to be present for the formal indictment.

This trial, unlike Khodorkovsky's first one in Moscow, is likely to take place in Siberia, far away from the media spotlight, Shmidt said.

"The Kremlin has planned this all," he said.

Prosecutors have not commented on the substance of the new charges. Shmidt said they would accuse Khodorkovsky of being involved in laundering oil revenues defrauded from Yukos through his Open Russia foundation.
