Watchdog to Grill Executives on Safety

The industry watchdog will test executives of energy and metals companies on their knowledge of safety procedures, starting with national power utility Unified Energy System's Anatoly Chubais.

Konstantin Pulikovsky, head of the Federal Service for Ecological, Technological and Atomic Inspection, will test the executives personally, the regulator said on its web site. He will start with Chubais, whose company struggled to resume power to 400,000 people in Sochi after winter storms caused blackouts in the resort city last month, watchdog spokesman Yevgeny Anoshin said, Vedomosti reported Friday.

"Technical competence will be evaluated in accordance with the person's title and responsibilities," the agency said.

Chemical, metals and oil companies will be checked by July. The government is seeking to improve safety at power plants and manufacturing facilities, many of which use old equipment.
