State to Boost Airport Spending 25%

The federal government will increase spending on airports by 25 percent this year to 20 billion rubles ($760 million) to make transport for people and goods easier.

The money will be used to repair and modernize airports, Deputy Transportation Minister Alexander Misharin said Friday in Krasnoyarsk.

The expenditure is up from 16 billion rubles in 2006 and 8 billion rubles in 2005, he said.

"With a lack of all-year-round roads, it's the only means of transportation" in some areas of Russia, Misharin said at a business conference organized by the Krasnoyarsk region administration and the Economic Development and Trade Ministry.

Air travel is booming as the country heads for a ninth year of economic growth. Improving safety is among the government's priorities, Misharin said.

As many as 313 people were killed in 12 airplane accidents in Russia last year, according to the State Statistics Service. Seven crashes killed 56 people in 2005.
