Prosecutors Summon Kasyanov

Former Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov has been summoned for questioning Monday by prosecutors investigating Federation Council Senator Andrei Vavilov on suspicions of fraud, Kasyanov spokeswoman Tatyana Razbash said.

Kasyanov, who is running for president in 2008, was told to appear before prosecutors Monday in connection with the investigation into Vavilov, suspected of committing fraud and abuse of office in 1997 while deputy finance minister, Razbash said.

Vavilov represents the Penza region in the Federation Council.

The investigation relates to the sale of MiG jets to India, according to the daily Nezavisimaya Gazeta. Prosecutors are seeking to have his parliamentary immunity annulled, the newspaper reported.

Fired by President Vladimir Putin in February 2004, Kasyanov came under investigation on suspicion of fraud and abuse of office last year after a lawmaker and investigative journalist alleged he had acquired a dacha near Moscow through front firms just before leaving office.

He has not been indicted, but the Moscow Arbitration Court ruled a January 2004 auction of the property invalid.

However, the court rejected a request to return the property to the state.
