The son of former Russian national football team coach Georgy Yartsev was found murdered early Monday.

Alexander Yartsev, 35, a youth team coach at Spartak Moscow, was discovered with fatal head injuries in his apartment in northeast Moscow, the city prosecutor's office said in a statement.

Georgy Yartsev was set to return to Moscow from Turkey after receiving word of his son's death. He was on a preseason tour with the team he now heads, Torpedo.

Yartsev was found by his mother at around 2 a.m., law enforcement sources said, RIA-Novosti reported. "She said that Alexander had not answered her phone calls for a long time, so she decided to go to his place," the source said.

Yartsev died at least one day before he was found, police said.

His father, Georgy Yartsev, was one of Spartak's top forwards in the late 1970s. Yartsev coached Spartak in 1996, the year the team won the league title.

In 2004, as the coach of the national team, Yartsev took Russia all the way to the European Championships in Portugal.

Alexander Yartsev trained with Spartak but never played for them, instead working for the club's youth team. The last game Yartsev attended was Thursday, when Spartak faced off against the Spanish team Celta Vigo at the UEFA Cup.

"It's more than likely that the murder came as a result of a quarrel, although the investigation is not excluding any other possible scenarios," the law enforcement source said.

The Russian Football Union and Spartak Moscow both issued statements expressing their condolences.
