Finger Food for Femmes

MTNail Room's purple and brown interior features giant orchid images.
No mere restaurant, Nail Room calls itself a "beauty lounge." And indeed this is not a regular restaurant -- it's also a beauty salon that specializes in, as the name would suggest, manicures.

The lounge's 10 manicure tables offer 16 kinds of nail treatments. But going beyond the standard beauty salon practice of offering you a cup of coffee while you wait, Nail Room is a full-fledged bar and restaurant.

Much like its neighbor, the Vision Cocktail Lounge, Nail Room is dominated by its huge windows. The panorama from its second-floor location in the Gimenei center is excellent, with a particularly good view of Zurab Tsereteli's controversial Peter the Great statue.

Orchids feature prominently in the fittingly feminine interior design. The chocolate and purple walls feature huge depictions of orchids, while a ceiling-high glass case displays about 100 of them.

The menu is heavy on health-inspiring treats for the beauty-conscious. The selection of fresh fruit and berry juices is impressive, with each rated from one to five points on six criteria: energy, purgation, immunity, digestion, skin and nail. As could be expected, the juices don't come cheap, starting at 250 rubles for 200 ml of orange or grapefruit juice. At the top end, a 150-ml glass of raspberry juice will set you back a stunning 1,150 rubles.

The food selection features all the femme-friendly faves -- popular dishes such as chicken Caesar salad (270 rubles) and buffalo mozzarella with tomatoes (500 rubles). There is a decent sandwich selection, ranging from 280 rubles for focaccia with chicken up to 470 rubles for panini with cheese and octopus.

The tea and coffee selection is solid, as is the wine list. And as at any self-respecting lounge, the cocktail selection is extensive, with numerous original creations.

Nail Room is perfect place for girly get-togethers, combined with a little pampering and a couple of cocktails. Or come for a weekday morning manicure and you'll get a complimentary coffee and croissant.
