Ay, Caramba: More Mex

MTCarambas' bright dining room makes for a cozy retreat on a cold day.
Now might just be the perfect time to visit Carambas. February's crisp winter weather and bright daylight make the nearby Sokolniki park the perfect place for skiing and skating. Its ample ice-covered alleyways and snowy tracks easily provide for a fun-filled day of active entertainment, while Carambas offers a pleasant retreat after a day of outdoor activity. The Mexican restaurant's basement setting is decorated in bright, primary colors and includes mock windows with views of desert scenes. The overall impression is at the same time both cheerful and cozy.

Although Carambas' menu is large, it doesn't try anything too fancy. Beer-friendly snacks include jalapenos stuffed with cheese, and marinated chicken wings with chipotle sauce or salsa (both 300 rubles). There are three kinds of quesadilla (chicken 250 rubles, mushroom 250 rubles and crab 350 rubles), three types of nachos (chicken 350 rubles, pork 350 rubles and beef 350 rubles) and four fajitas (chicken 450 rubles, pork 400 rubles, beef 500 rubles and seafood 600 rubles). The tasty chili con carne costs 400 rubles, while a 900-gram mixed plate for two, including chicken wings, jalapenos stuffed with cheese, Chorizo sausage, garnachas pies stuffed with meat and mushrooms and quesadilla with crab and chicken, costs 850 rubles. There is also a large steak menu with prices averaging around 700 rubles, which includes two side dishes.

As would be expected, there is a decent range of tequila. More unusually, there is also a wide range of draft beer including such brews as Guinness (200 rubles a half-liter) and Newcastle Brown Ale (180 rubles a half-liter). Mexican beer consists of 330-milliliter bottles of Corona Extra for 180 rubles. Carambas provides a 20 percent discount on the whole menu on weekdays from noon to 3 p.m.

As for entertainment, Tuesday through Saturday there is live Latino music starting at 8 p.m. and on Fridays and Saturdays the restaurant holds parties with Latino dance performances and even lessons for the uncoordinated but enthusiastic.
