A Just Russia to Get Bigger

The People's Party is joining the new pro-Kremlin coalition party A Just Russia, Vedomosti reported Tuesday.

While neither A Just Russia nor the People's Party would confirm the development, the two groups have scheduled a news conference for Friday.

Vedomosti, citing a Just Russia source, said Gennady Gudkov, the People's Party chief and a member of United Russia, was preparing to move to A Just Russia. His party has 95,000 members.

A Just Russia was created in October, when Rodina, the Pensioners' Party and Party of Life merged. It was formed with an eye toward providing a counterbalance to United Russia. While both parties ostensibly support Kremlin policies, the creation of an "opposition" appears to have provoked real divisions. Members of United Russia's youth wing in Mineralny Vody pelted pensioners listening to a speech by an official from A Just Russia, Gazeta.ru reported Tuesday. One pensioner was hurt with a knife.

Vladimir Pribylovsky, a political analyst with Panorama, noted that the People's Party had 20 percent support in Tatarstan. "Mironov can cash in on that support," he said of Sergei Mironov, the leader of A Just Russia.
