8 Die in Blaze at Construction Site

A fire that broke out early Wednesday morning at a construction site in the Moscow region town of Veshki claimed eight lives and left three people injured, Interfax reported.

The fire started at around 4 a.m. on the second floor of a sports facility that was under construction.

The 4,500-square-meter facility was almost entirely destroyed, a spokesman for the regional Emergency Situations Ministry said.

Firefighters managed to extinguish the fire by 6 a.m. They discovered the bodies of the dead construction workers as they began to clear away the charred rubble.

Prosecutors said Wednesday that the eight workers were believed to be citizens of Moldova and Tajikistan, Interfax reported.

Of the three people who were injured, only one was hospitalized. The others were treated at the scene and released.

Regional prosecutors have opened a criminal investigation.

Veshki, a town in the Mytishchinsky district, is located north of Moscow a few kilometers from the Moscow Ring Road.
