News in Brief

Kiselyov to Head RTVi

Former NTV television director and anchor Yevgeny Kiselyov has been appointed editor in chief of Vladimir Gusinsky's RTVi satellite network, reported Monday.

Kiselyov, who currently hosts a political show on the network, will take over for Andrei Norkin, the web site said.

RTVi is an international network owned by Gusinsky, who now has Spanish citizenship and is wanted on fraud charges in an investigation widely seen as punishment for critical coverage of President Vladimir Putin on NTV, once part of Gusinsky's Media-MOST empire. (MT)

Rights Activist Sentenced

A prominent Uzbek human rights activist has been sentenced to six years and three months in jail on charges of fraud, a colleague said Monday, amid an ongoing crackdown on dissidents and government critics in the Central Asian state.

A court in Syrdarya convicted Karim Bozorboyev, a regional leader of the Esguliq rights group, rights advocate Abdurakhmon Tashanov said. Uzbek officials were not available for comment.

Bozorboyev joined the group in 2004 after leaving Fidokorlar, a government-affiliated political party, saying he was disgusted by corruption among Uzbek officials. (AP)
