Investigators Join Quake Cash Probe

Investigators are looking into the effort to rebuild an earthquake-devastated town on Sakhalin, it was revealed Friday, a day after Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov rebuked Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin over the "loss" of money earmarked for the project.

A team of prosecutors from the Investigative Committee, a semi-autonomous agency under the aegis of the Prosecutor General's Office, earlier in the week accompanied Zubkov to Sakhalin to assess the state's effort to replace damaged housing and address local residents' concerns after an earthquake in August, state-owned Rossiiskaya Gazeta reported Friday.

When he returned to Moscow, Zubkov dressed down Kudrin over the "loss" of 1 billion rubles ($40 million) intended for the rebuilding effort.

The Finance Ministry says no money is missing. The regional Sakhalin government asked for the additional funds and the ministry has yet to approve the request, a ministry spokesman said.
