Ask the Boss

Q: When is the best time of year to look for a new job?

Anna Shlyapochnikova, head of Ancor recruitment holding's Express Recruitment branch:

I can't say that there is a 'bad' time to look for a job. Rather, there is not as much activity from the employer's side during New Year's and May holidays, when many of the people responsible for the hiring process are on vacation. It is best to look for a job when you are ready to invest time into the process: respond to vacancies, go to interviews, etc. But if you choose to change jobs during the summer or in December to January, be ready for the process to take longer."

Ivan Scalfarotto, Citi's human resources director for Russia & CIS:

Besides the Program for Young Professionals, which is structured according to training schedules, there is no good or bad time to seek work at Citi. As soon as there are vacancies, we hire employees.

"I have to add, however, that August and December tend to be calmer from the point of view of recruitment, and for business in general, because of holiday and vacation season, but it's not a blanket rule. Some recruitment programs for college graduates start in August."

Lada Syutkina, Colliers International's regional human resources and general affairs director:

The ideal job search periods would be from February to April and from September to November. However, in many aspects it depends on a position level. If the job position is middle level or high, the recruitment period before the final hire can last a while, because the candidate has to meet other executives, and frequently has to complete a test assignment. As a result, it is better to begin the job search beforehand. But starting positions fill quickly, and you can find such a job even in December. Nowadays, the commercial real estate market is at a stage of rapid growth, and consequently we are actively engaged in recruiting the whole year round."
