Streets to Be Shut for Demonstrations

Several streets in central Moscow will be closed off to traffic Saturday and Sunday because of numerous planned demonstrations, a city traffic police official said Thursday, Itar-Tass reported.

Vasilyevsky Spusk, Bolotnaya Ploshchad and Bolotnaya Ulitsa will be closed to traffic Saturday as of 8 a.m., and Prospekt Akademika Sakharova will be closed as of 11:30 a.m.

On Sunday, cars will have limited access to Bolotnaya Ploshchad and Bolotnaya Ulitsa as of 12:00 p.m., and Vasilyevsky Spusk will be partially closed to traffic as of 1 p.m., the official told Itar-Tass.

The official did not specify exactly how long the streets would be closed, saying only that cars would be kept away "until the end of the planned demonstrations," Itar-Tass said.

Thousands of people are expected to take to the streets for more than 20 rallies over the weekend, including demonstrations organized by the Communist Party, pro-Kremlin youth groups and opposition activists.

A Dissenters' March organized by opposition coalition The Other Russian is schedule for 1 p.m. Saturday at 1 p.m. on Prospekt Akademika Sakharova.
