Matviyenko Murder Plot

The Federal Security Service has wrapped up the investigation of three people charged with plotting to assassinate St. Petersburg Governor Valentina Matviyenko, Interfax reported Thursday.

Timur Saidrageyev, Ravil Muratov and Fyodor Baranov will stand trial in the St. Petersburg City Court in connection with the purported plot, an FSB source told Interfax.

Two other suspects are at large and currently being sought by authorities, the source said.

The FSB announced in May that suspects in the purported plot were detained and found in possession of two F-1 hand grenades and more than 500 grams of plastic explosives. (MT)

17 Indicted in Identity Theft

NEW YORK -- A Russian-Ukrainian couple are among 17 people indicted in New York on charges of identity theft, worldwide trafficking in stolen credit card numbers and other types of Internet crime, U.S. prosecutors said Wednesday.

The 173-count indictment says the defendants trafficked in more than 95,000 stolen credit card numbers and caused more than $4 million in credit card fraud.

Married couple Vadim Vassilenko, 40, and Yelena Barysheva, 42, pleaded guilty last year to falsifying records and violating the state's banking law.

Vassilenko, born in Ukraine, was sentenced to two to six years in prison, and Barysheva, born in Russia, was sentenced to one to three years. (AP)
